About
My research interests are sports, culture, and race and ethnicity. I examine the intersections of race and sport, and their institutional framework. I am particularly interested in the development of American intercollegiate athletics and their continual link to Muscular Christianity. I am interested in how institution use and justify sport compared with how racial minorities use it.
My most recent work has come in the area of Native American athletics. My master's thesis was a study of iconic Native American athletes, Jim Thorpe and Billy Mills. I analyze how they used sport to navigate the political, social and cultural structures that framed their lives and challenges expectations of Indianness through the activism in Native American causes. I have also completed work on ghost stories, the Olympic Games, stadium referenda, and a variety of institutional histories.
I completed a BA in history at Baker University in 2008 and a Master of Liberal Arts in 2009. I next studied at an the University of Nevada finishing an MA in History in 2011. I am now a doctoral student in the department of history at Purdue University.
